Castlevania: Lament of Innocence is an action-adventure game developed and published by Konami for the PlayStation 2. It was released in North America and Japan in October 2003 and in Europe in February 2004. The game serves as a prequel to the original Castlevania series revealing the origins of the Belmont family’s vampire hunting legacy. Set in 1094 during the Middle Ages players take on the role of Leon Belmont a noble knight who embarks on a quest to rescue his kidnapped betrothed Sara from the clutches of the vampire lord Walter Bernhard. To achieve his goal Leon must navigate through the vampire’s castle battling various monsters and uncovering its secrets. Lament of Innocence features a 3D action-adventure gameplay style with players exploring the castle’s different areas solving puzzles and engaging in combat with a wide variety of enemies. Leon can wield different weapons such as swords axes and maces each with their own unique abilities and attack patterns. He can also learn new combat techniques and gain power-ups as he progresses through the game. In addition to the main storyline Lament of Innocence also includes an unlockable “Crazy Mode” that offers an increased challenge for experienced players. The game received generally positive reviews for its engaging gameplay atmospheric graphics and soundtrack although some critics noted repetitive elements and a linear level design. Lament of Innocence marks the first installment of the Castlevania series on the PlayStation 2 and is considered an important entry in the franchise’s history.
