This layer allows the head to move 10-15 mm relative to the helmet in all directions during a fall and redirect energies and forces that would otherwise be transmitted to the brain. MIPS helmets are designed to protect the brain from an angled impact because angled falls create rotational forces that are transmitted to the brain and can lead to brain injury.
